I found myself skipping page after page while one or the other sat around thinking about their history and even setting up the premise for the remaining stories. The author was a Christian lawyer (1455-1522) who had a rabbi teach him Hebrew so he could better study religious sources, explains that Jewish books are a necessary foundation of Christian religious tradition, destroying them wouldn't succeed (because Jews could still get copies from other countries), and (interestingly) that burning Jewish books would be against legal agreements between the German ruler who asked Reuchlin's opinion on the issue and the Jewish community "permitted" to live in his jurisdiction.
